Amazon has offered to redistribute new copies of the novels of George Orwell that were accidentally deleted from Kindle libraries, or provide check or gift certificate worth $30. As an apology for the deletion.
“This is an apology for the way we previously handled illegally sold copies of 1984 and other novels on Kindle. Our ’solution’ to the problem was stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with our principles. It is wholly self-inflicted, and we deserve the criticism we’ve received. We will use the scar tissue from this painful mistake to help make better decisions going forward, ones that match our mission,” said Jeff Bezos CEO of Amazon
Users who have purchased the copies can email kindle-response@amazon.com to claim the offer and confirm whether they would like replacement copy, or check or the gift certificate. Amazon said that copies will be returned with annotation.
Back in July, Amazon had received a torrent of criticism for their decision to remove copies of “1984″ and “Animal Farm” from Kindle Library after they realized that some versions of the ebooks were added to the library by unauthorized publisher. However, the move to delete copies of the books purchased legally by the excessive share of an authoritarian central government considered as ridiculous.
